Claypool leads No. 13 UCLA past Pepperdine, 5-1Bruins sweep season series against Waves
The struggling Waves (13-23) started well on Tuesday against UCLA. Pepperdine took an early 1-0 lead when Brian Humphries deposited a Garrett Claypool offering over the right field fence. From that point, the Waves would produce just two more hits off the Bruins’ starter. Claypool, who went 6.1 innings, improved to 7-1.
It remained 1-0 until the fourth when the Bruins received RBI singles from Trevor Brown and Steve Rodriguez. UCLA (31-10) would only need two runs, but it added three more in the fifth. Beau Amaral led off the frame with a double and Brett Krill singled him home. With runners on second and third after a Chris Giovinazzo double, Niko Gallego singled to make the score 5-1. Former Bruin and Pepperdine starter Robert Dickmann lasted just four innings. He surrendered five runs on 11 hits.
Every Bruin except leadoff batter Blair Dunlap had a hit in the game. Second baseman Cody Regis led UCLA with his 3-of-4 effort. UCLA outhit Pepperdine, 15-4. The Bruins travel to Seattle this weekend where they will attempt to climb in the PAC-10 standings with three games against the Washington Huskies.
