No. 28 Wildcats stave off sweep with 3-1 win over BeaversArizona and Oregon State conclude their regular seasons on Sunday in Corvallis
After dropping the first two games of the series, Arizona used a strong effort by its bullpen and a two-run homer by Steve Selsky to beat Oregon State, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium in Corvallis. The Wildcats (33-22, 12-15) wasted no time in taking the lead. Rafael Valenzuela doubled with one out and scored on a single by Jett Bandy. However, Arizona did squander an opportunity to extend the lead. After making it 1-0, it loaded the bases, but Robert Refsnyder grounded into an inning ending double play. The Beavers (31-22, 12-15) tied the score in the third. Tyler Smith started things with a one out double. After moving to third on a groundout, he crossed the plate on a passed ball. It remained 1-1 until the sixth when Jett Bandy singled to set the stage for Selsky’s homerun—which proved to be the game winner.
Nick Cunningham allowed four hits in 3.1 shutout innings of relief to earn the win for Arizona. Stephen Manthei worked two scoreless innings of relief during which he surrendered just one hit before Bryce Bandilla came on to record his first save of the season. Tyler Waldron (4-5) took the loss for the Beavers. He allowed just two earned runs on two hits in four innings of relief, but couldn’t receive any run support. He struck out five and walked no one. Both Arizona and Oregon State will now wait and see if they will be selected as at-large teams for the Road to Omaha. The field of 64 will be announced on Monday at 12:30 p.m. (EST).
