No. 3 Sun Devils slip past No. 24 Wildcats, 4-2Arizona State takes series from rival in Tucson
After splitting a pair of 12-4 games, No. 3 Arizona State and No. 24 Arizona tangled in a pitcher’s duel on Monday night in Tucson. Following five scoreless frames, ASU (43-6, 16-5) got on the board first by pushing across a run without a hit in the sixth. Austin Barnes and Kole Calhoun were on the corners with two outs. Seeking to make something happen, Calhoun broke for second and Barnes scored from third when the Wildcats threw through. The lead didn’t last long, as Zona’s Jake Borup delivered a two-out single to score Rafael Valenzuela and knot the game at one in the bottom of the inning.
The Sun Devils would go ahead to stay in the seventh. Andrew Aplin, who went 2-for-3, drove in Johnny Ruettiger with a two-out single to make it 2-1. ASU would add some needed insurance in the ninth. With the bases loaded, Alpin walked and Barnes was hit by a pitch to extend the Sun Devils advantage to 4-1. The Wildcats wouldn’t go down without a fight. They cut it to 4-2 in the bottom of the frame before ending the threat with a 4-6-3 double play. Riccio Torrez went 2-for-4 for ASU. Seth Mejias-Brean went 2-for-4 for Zona. Mitchell Lambson (6-2) worked 2.1 innings in relief of starter Jake Borup to notch the win. Borup allowed just a single run on one hit in 5.2, but received the no decision. Arizona State will host Oregon State at Packard Stadium this weekend while Stanford visits Tucson to play Arizona.
