Top-ranked Sun Devils outlast Hogs, 7-6, in 12 inningsArizona State moves within a victory of Omaha
Top-ranked Arizona State led 3-0 after three innings, but was forced to battle back from a 6-4 deficit to take a 7-6, 12-inning victory over Arkansas. The Sun Devils (51-8) received a total of 13 free passes from four different Arkansas pitchers, but were unable to take advantage as they left an astounding 19 runners on. Reliever Mitchell Lambson allowed just one hit during five shutout innings of relief to earn the win for ASU. The see-saw affair featured Arkansas erasing its 3-0 hole by knotting the game with a three-spot in the fourth before falling behind on an error in the bottom of the frame.
The Hogs (43-20) scored three unanswered over the next couple innings to re-take a 6-4 lead, but ASU pulled within 6-5 on Calhoun’s 17 th homer of the season and forced free baseball with a run in the bottom of the ninth. Deven Marrero ended the game with a one-out walk-off single in the 12 th. He plated Calhoun, who led off the inning with his fifth walk of the game. With the victory, Arizona State moves to within a win of punching its ticket to Omaha. The Sun Devils will square off against Arkansas in game two of the Super Regional on Sunday night at Packard Stadium.
