Second-ranked Sun Devils crush Cougars, 14-0

Arizona State takes the first of two mid-week contests with BYU

All aspects of No. 2 Arizona State’s game were clicking on Monday.

The Sun Devils (40-5) pounded out 13 hits off five BYU pitchers and left fielder Johnny Ruettiger went 2-for-5 with two home runs and five RBI.

BYU starter Chunner Nyberg allowed six runs—all earned—on five hits in just 2.1 innings of work and took the loss for the Cougars. None of the Cougars five pitchers went longer than 2.2 innings.

The Sun Devils plated two in the second, but proceeded to explode for six in the third on the strength of Ruettiger’s two-run shot. He would hit a three-run blast in the eighth.

Six Sun Devils finished the game with two hits.

Five ASU pitchers combined on a three-hitter. Starter Seth Blair allowed just a hit in three innings to notch the win. Brady Rodgers also worked three innings of one-hit baseball. Mitchell Lambson, Jake Barrett and Jordan Swagerty all pitched one inning in relief.

The Sun Devils will square off against the Cougars again today at Packard Stadium in Tempe.
