No. 11 Fullerton upends No. 8 UCLA, 5-2

Titans top Bruins in battle of LA area rivals

Five Fullerton pitchers combined to three-hit UCLA and lead the Titans to a 5-2 win over their L.A. area rival on Tuesday night at Goodwin Field in Fullerton.

No. 11 Fullerton (38-15) wasted no time moving in front, as they plated two runs in the bottom of the first. Garrett Claypool plunked the first Titan batter he faced and designated hitter Tyler Pill connected on a two-run shot with two outs.

The Bruins (41-12) cut the lead in half when Cody Regis led off the second with a solo shot to right field.

It remained 2-1 until the seventh when the Titans tacked on three more runs. Nick Ramirez’s tenth home run of the year—a three run shot to right—made it 5-1. Matt Grace, who came in to relieve starter Garrett Claypool, allowed a bunt single and hit a batter to set the stage for Ramirez.

UCLA’s Tyler Rahmatulla made it 5-2 with a single to left in the eighth, but the Bruins would not get any closer as they went in order in the ninth.

Claypool surrendered just two runs—both earned—on three hits in six innings, but took the loss.

Fullerton’s Noe Ramirez, who didn’t allow a run or hit in his 2.2 innings, picked up the win to improve to 9-1.

UCLA will host Washington State this weekend in its final action before beginning NCAA Tournament play.
