UCLA vs USC - NCAA Regional Baseball Recap

UCLA 6, LSU 3 - UCLA earns Sunday afternoon / elimination round bye

The UCLA Bruins beat the LSU Tigers in the 2006 basketball Final Four, and they beat LSU in another foursome known as the Los Angeles Regional of the 2010 NCAA baseball tournament.

UCLA got a strong outing from starting pitcher Trevor Bauer, who overpowered the LSU lineup for most of the day. Bauer threw eight shutout innings before giving up three runs - only one of them earned - in the bottom of the ninth. Bauer struck out 11 and picked up the win, moving to 10-3 for the season.

The Bruins - unlike a lot of winners this regional weekend - did not explode for a big inning. The Pac-10 power scored single runs in six separate innings to nibble the Bayou Bengals to death. Four different Bruins knocked in at least one run, as UCLA effectively countered the power pitching of LSU starter Anthony Ranaudo. Yes, Ranaudo struck out 10 in six innings, but he couldn't pitch his way out of tough situations with the same consistency Bauer displayed. Ranaudo took the loss and fell to 5-3.

UCLA will relax while UC Irvine and LSU fight for survival in Sunday afternoon's elimination game. The winner of that deathmatch will face UCLA late Sunday night.
