Horned Frogs hold off Bruins, 6-2

UCLA will be forced to face TCU again on Saturday

After losing to UCLA in the winner’s bracket game four days earlier, TCU battled back to meet the unbeaten Bruins on Friday night. With their 6-2 victory, the Horned Frogs force a re-match on Saturday and the winner will earn a spot in next week’s best-of-three College World Series Championship series against either Clemson or South Carolina.

TCU (54-13) took the lead in the first when Witte and Featherston drew two out walks to force in Holaday. However, the Horned Frogs did leave them loaded in the frame.

It hung up another in the second when Jerome Pena singled to plate Schultz, who had doubled earlier.

Pena homered to left center in the fourth to push the Frogs’ advantage to 3-0.

After getting on the board in the fifth, UCLA cut its deficit to 3-2 in the seventh. However, the Bruins left the bases juiced and missed an opportunity to tie or take the lead.

The Horned Frogs responded with two runs via a Taylor Featherston homer in the bottom of the inning and added another insurance run with Holaday’s 15th round tripper of the season in the eighth.

TCU starter Matt Purke turned in another masterful performance to improve to 16-0 on the year. Purke, who was the beneficiary of 14 Bruin groundouts, allowed just two runs—both earned—on three hits in 6.1 innings.

Tyler Lockwood allowed just one hit in 2.2 innings of scoreless relief to notch his eighth save.

Rob Rasmussen (11-2) suffered just his second loss for UCLA.

The Bruins (50-15) mustered just four hits in the game and Cody Regis had two of those.
