Bruins thump TCU, 10-3, to reach CWS finals
UCLA will meet either South Carolina or Clemson in Championship series
UCLA was unable to solve TCU’s Matt Purke on Friday and missed an opportunity to punch its ticket for the College World Series Championship series, but the Bruins bounced back with a 10-3 victory that has placed them in their first-ever title series.
TCU, which ends its season at 54-14, did take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Bryan Holaday homered to left.
However, the Bruins (51-15) responded with a five-spot in the bottom of the frame and never looked back.
Horned Frog starter Kyle Winkler, who took the loss and fell to 12-3, was chased after just nine pitches. After hitting Bruin leadoff man Beau Amaral, Gallego singled and Dunlap delivered a three-run shot to left. Winkler was pulled in favor of Paul Gerrish. Gerrish walked Cody Regis before allowing a run-scoring double to Gelalich and rbi single to Espy.
The Bruins first inning production alone would have been enough support for its starter Trevor Bauer. Bauer surrendered three runs—only two earned—on four hits in eight complete. He struck out 13 and walked just two.
Cody Regis’ run-scoring double in the second made it 6-1, UCLA.
The Horned Frogs tried to hang in as they scored single runs in the fourth and fifth via a Weik sacrifice fly and Bryan Holaday’s second homer of the day.
UCLA responded with two spots in each of its next two at-bats to extinguish any hopes the Horned Frogs had of making a comeback.
The Bruins will now play either South Carolina or Clemson in the CWS best-of-three title series, which begins on Monday night at Rosenblatt Stadium.
