USC upends New Mexico State, 5-3, with late rallyTrojans top Aggies in mid-week action
It’s been a struggle for much of this season for Southern Cal. However, the Trojans produced a bright spot on Wednesday night by plating three runs in the bottom of the eighth to post a 5-3 come-from-behind victory and two-game sweep over a strong New Mexico State team at Dedeaux Field in Los Angeles. USC beat the Aggies, 9-8, in 11 innings on Tuesday. USC (25-28) received three stellar innings of relief from Brad Douthit, which held the score at 3-2. Douthit allowed just two hits and picked up his first win of the season. The Aggies (36-21-1) jumped ahead 1-0 in the first when Ben Harty delivered a two-out single to left. The Trojans escaped further damaged, as NMSU left the bases loaded. USC took its first advantage in the bottom of the frame when Keith Castillo hit a two-run shot—his third homerun of the year—to make it 2-1. NMSU retook the lead in the third when Chace Perkins connected on his 16th long ball. The two-run homer made it 3-2 Aggies. It remained 3-2 until the bottom of the eighth.
After Mike O’Neill led off with a single, Joe DePinto bunted him into scoring position. Following an intentional walk to Ricky Oropesa, Keith Castillo came through with a single to knot the game at 3-3. The Aggies went to their bullpen, but Matt Foat produced the run-scoring single that made it 4-3 off the newly inserted Coffman. USC tacked on an insurance run when Kevin Roundtree grounded out to second to plate Matt Hart, who pinch ran for Castillo.
Down two, New Mexico State got two baserunners on in the ninth, but couldn’t get anything across. Ben Harty and Leo Aguirre had three hit games for NMSU. Mike O’Neill, Keith Castillo and Matt Foat all had two hits for the Trojans. USC travels to Pullman this weekend for three games against the Cougars of Washington State.
