Southern Cal surprises No. 21 UC Irvine, 8-1

Trojans top Eaters in mid-week play

No. 21 UC Irvine scored first, but Southern Cal responded with eight unanswered runs and the Trojans posted an impressive 8-1 non-conference victory on Tuesday night at Dedeaux Field in Los Angeles.

The Anteaters (34-19) got the only run they would get in the fourth.
Casey Stevenson drew a leadoff walk to start the inning, but was stranded on first with two outs. However, Drew Hillman was then hit by a pitch and Francis Larson proceeded to deliver a run-scoring single.

With two outs in the bottom of the frame, Cade Kreuter walked to keep the inning alive. Following a pitching change, Beau Brett and Adam Landecker also drew free passes to load the bases. Alex Glenn and Garrett Houts came through with singles to put Southern Cal up 3-1.

The Trojans extended their lead to 4-1 in the seventh. After Garrett Houts led off with a double, Mike O’Neill bunted him to third from where he scored on Joe De Pinto’s single.

USC (26-31) blew it open in the eighth by scoring four runs on just two hits due to the aid of two Irvine errors. All the damage was done after Garrett Houts walked with two outs. Oropesa doubled home a run while Kreuter singled up the middle to score two.

UC Irvine managed just three hits off USC starter Brandon Garcia. Garcia allowed just one run over 7.2 innings to improve to 2-3 on the season.

The Trojans will conclude their season this weekend with a three-game series versus Washington at Dedeaux Field.
