Cougars complete sweep of No. 18 CalWashington State evens league record at 9-9 with third straight victory over Bears
After assuring itself of a series win with 13-10 and 11-9 victories in the first two games against No. 18 Cal, Washington State started game three with a five-run first and would go on to a 9-4 win in Pullman, Washington on Monday afternoon. The Cougars (25-17, 9-9) did all of their damage with two outs in the first with the most coming via Patrick Claussen’s three-run blast to right field. Cal (27-18, 11-10) cut its deficit to 5-2 in the third. Tony Renda tripled home Danny Oh and he would later score on an error.
WSU extended its lead back to five in the fourth. Garry Kuykendall led off the inning with a double before scoring on a single by Cody Bartlett. Bartlett would cross the plate when Brett Jacobs grounded out to second. Ten Cougars combined for 15 hits and five players had two apiece. WSU’s 7-8-9 hitters went 6-for-11. WSU starter Adam Conley went 6.2 innings to get the victory. He allowed four runs—three earned—on eight hits.
Designated hitter and leadoff man Tony Renda had three of California’s nine hits. Dixon Anderson suffered the loss for the Bears. He lasted just 3.1 innings and allowed eight runs—all earned—on 11 hits. Washington State returns to action today at Portland while Cal won’t play again until May 18 when it hosts San Francisco.
