No. 20 Cougars blank Bulldogs, 2-0Washington State traveled to Gonzaga in make-up of March 30 game
Washington State’s Paris Shewey and Gonzaga’s Liam Baron engaged in an excellent pitcher’s duel on Tuesday in Spokane. Shewey and Baron matched each other zero for zero through the first six frames. The No. 20 Cougars (32-18), who received everything they wanted and then some from the Bulldogs’ lefthander, but back-to-back extra-base hits in the seventh would provide them with the only runs they would need. WSU’s Derek Jones led off the inning with a double down the right field line. Shea Vucinich’s followed with a triple to make it 1-0. A sacrifice fly to right by Argyropoulous plated the Cougars other run.
With the win, Shewey improved to 7-2. He allowed just three hits in seven shutout innings. Connor Lambert surrendered just one hit over two innings of relief to notch his second save. Liam Baron, the tough luck loser, fell to 0-7. He gave up just two runs—both earned—on five hits in 7.2 innings of work. The southpaw struck out six and walked just one. Mark Castellitto went 2-for-4 to lead the Bulldogs at the plate. Washington State returns home where it will host Portland on Wednesday.
