Stanford shocks No. 17 Huskies with tip-in, 58-56
The Cardinal remains unbeaten at home this season
Josh Owens' tip with 29 seconds remaining gave Stanford a two-point lead and the Cardinal survived the Huskies' last-second efforts to capture a huge conference win on Thursday night at Maples Pavilion.
The Cardinal (10-5, 3-1) trailed by 11 following Venoy Overton's lay-up with just under nine minutes to play. However, Johnny Dawkins' club continued to chip away until it took a 53-51 lead on a three by Jeremy Green with 3:47 remaining.
Following a Dwight Powell lay-up and free throw by Green, Stanford's advantage was three with just over a minute to play when Scott Suggs knocked down a trifecta to tie things at 56.
The Huskies (12-4, 4-1), who had their 11-game Pac-10 win streak snapped, had a chance to even things when Justin Holiday went to the line with just 2.5 seconds left. However, Holiday missed the first and then had to miss the second intentionally. Stanford's Dwight Powell brought down the rebound, but traveled to keep the door open for Washington. The Cardinal would escape, though, as Holiday's jumper at the buzzer was off the mark.
Josh Owens had a game-high 14 points and five boards to lead Stanford. Dwight Powell and Jeremy Green also scored in double figures for the Cardinal with 11 and 12 points, respectively. Powell pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
Washington was led by Justin Holiday, who had 15 points. Isaiah Thomas finished with 14 and also had seven assists. Aziz N'Diaye tallied a game-high 11 boards.
With the victory, Stanford improves to 8-0 at Maples Pavilion.
