Pac-10 to become Pac-12 in 2011-2012

Conference to change name to correctly identify its new status

Despite having 11 members since Penn State’s inception, the Big Ten has opted to keep its name.

However, the Pac-10—which added Colorado and Utah into its fold a couple months ago—is choosing not to identify itself in a misleading way.

The league, which was originally the Pac-8, has been the Pac-10 since Arizona and Arizona State were admitted to the league in 1978.

The name change will take effect prior to the 2011-12 season.
