California Golden Bears vs UC Davis Aggies Football PreviewThe boys from Berkeley regularly bring a lot of talent to the table under head coach Jeff Tedford, but Cal has yet to reach a BCS bowl or acquire the heightened stature it so manifestly craves in the college football world. The school is in the midst of a substantial facilities upgrade which has created many rifts at the academic powerhouse in the San Francisco Bay Area. Pouring millions of dollars into the football program has split academics and members of the athletic department, creating an identity crisis in Berkeley. All of this activity is going forward, though, a sign of the leverage King Pigskin enjoys at the current moment. Before Tedford came along and revived what had been a moribund operation, such renovations wouldn’t have had any credibility at all.

Cal has regularly run into a wall named USC over the past several seasons, but with the Trojans ineligible for the Rose Bowl, the Golden Bears are hoping to get to Pasadena for the first time since the 1959. In order for this to happen, senior quarterback Kevin Riley has to deliver the goods. Riley’s last two seasons have been pedestrian. A mere 2-to-1 TD/INT ratio won’t cut it. Neither will completion percentages just over 50 (51 in 2008, 55 in 2009). This opener against the Aggies of UC-Davis needs to give Riley a solid forward push into the rest of the 2010 campaign.
